    Deep understanding of degradation in lithium ion batteries through experimental and first-principles study

    The growing interests in Lithium-ion Batteries (LIBs) have significantly accelerated the development of active materials. However, the key challenge is that electrode materials suffer from degradation, which include transition metal dissolution, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formation, and mechanical fracture. To address these issues, applying an ultrathin coating onto active materials via Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is an efficient way. Although numerious works have been done for active material performance improvement via ALD technology, the fundamental enhancement mechanisms of ALD coating on battery performance improvement are not yet known. Therefore, this dissertation consists of four papers, which focused on the ALD coating impact on Li intercalation, metal dissolution, Li ion diffusivity and interfacial property of SEI layer via first-principles study. Paper I explained why CeO2 coating has better performance than Al2O3 coating material via faster Li diffusion, facile intercalation, and less mechanical damage of coating. Paper II discovered an unexpected metal dissolution that ultrathin CeO2 coating intensifies the Mn dissolution of LMO and it was confirmed in several ways, including ICP-OES measurement, Mn vacancy formation energy calculation, COOP analysis, PDOS analysis, and cell level performance. Paper III revealed that the ALD CeO2 coating thickness impact on Li ion diffusivity in coated LMO is related to surface and bulk diffusion domination and phase transition of coating layers. Paper IV demonstrated that the fracture strength of inorganic components of SEI layer was higher than organic component, implying that the inorganic-organic interface can effectively block electron transport from electrolyte to anode particles to prevent futher oxidation of active materials --Abstract, page iv

    Regulation of Dendrite-Free Li Plating Via Lithiophilic Sites on Lithium-Alloy Surface

    Lithium (Li) deposition behavior plays an important role in dendrite formation and the subsequent performance of lithium metal batteries. This work reveals the impact of the lithiophilic sites of lithium-alloy on the Li plating process via the first-principles calculations. We find that the Li deposition mechanisms on the Li metal and Li22Sn5 surface are different due to the lithiophilic sites. We first propose that Li plating on the Li metal surface goes through the adsorption-reduction-desorption-heterogeneous nucleation-cluster drop process, while it undergoes the adsorption-reduction-growth process on the Li22Sn5 surface. The lower adsorption energy contributes to the easy adsorption of Li on the lithiophilic sites of the Li22Sn5 surface. The lower Li reduction energy on the Li metal surface indicates that it is easy for Li to be reduced on the Li metal surface, attributed to its higher Fermi energy level. Furthermore, the faster Li diffusion on the Li22Sn5 surface results in smooth Li deposition, which is based on a two-Li synergy diffusion mechanism. However, Li diffuses more slowly on the Li metal surface than on the Li22Sn5 surface due to the single Li diffusion mechanism. This work provides a fundamental understanding on the impact of lithiophilic sites of Li alloy on the Li plating process and points out that the future design of 3D Li-alloy substrates decorated with multilithiophilic sites can prevent dendrite formation on the lithium-alloy substrate by guiding uniform Li deposition

    Prevalence and clinical management of cytomegalovirus retinitis in AIDS patients in shanghai, china

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cytomegalovirus retinitis is a common AIDS-associated illness, leading to blindness in up to 30% of patients. This study was to investigate the prevalence and clinical management of the cytomegalovirus retinitis associated with AIDS in a large municipality of China.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Clinical and laboratory data from 23 cytomegalovirus retinitis patients (35 eyes) out of 303 hospitalized AIDS individuals in a single medical center were analyzed retrospectively. Two of 23 patients were diagnosed cytomegalovirus retinitis just before hospitalization without anti-CMV therapy. Ganciclovir combined with the high active anti-retroviral therapy was installed for treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis after diagnosis was confirmed. The data were analyzed by specialists and statistics was also applied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of cytomegalovirus retinitis in hospitalized AIDS patients was 7.6% in this study. The level of CD<sub>4</sub><sup>+ </sup>T lymphocytes was correlated well with the occurrence of cytomegalovirus retinitis, showing 16.8% (19/113) (95% confidence interval: 10.4,25.0), 5.4% (3/56) (95% confidence interval: 1.1,14.9), and 1.4% (1/69) (95% confidence interval: 0.0,7.8) occurrence in the patients with CD<sub>4</sub><sup>+ </sup>T lymphocyte counts < 50, 50~99, and 100~199 cells/Όl, respectively. The mean CD<sub>4</sub><sup>+ </sup>T lymphocyte counts was 31.7 ± 38.6 cells/Όl in 23 AIDS patients with cytomegalovirus retinitis. Median CD<sub>4</sub><sup>+ </sup>T lymphocyte count is 20 cells/Όl with inter-quartile range as (5, 36). Seven patients died (11 eyes) and 16 patients (24 eyes) survived. The proportion of blindness and low vision in eyes infected with cytomegalovirus retinitis respectively was 20.8% (5/24) and 29.2% (7/24) when they were diagnosed in survivors. The ganciclovir therapy was effective in 16 patients (24 eyes). Clinical recovery of cytomegalovirus retinitis was 41.7% (10/24) and clinical improvement 58.3% (14/24). After anti-CMV treatment, the proportion of blindness or low vision was 16.7% (4/24).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The AIDS patients with CD<sub>4</sub><sup>+ </sup>T lymphocyte < 50 cells/Όl had increased susceptibility to cytomegalovirus associated retinitis. Cytomegalovirus retinitis is a serious disease causing blindness. The cytomegalovirus retinitis in the AIDS patients was response well to ganciclovir therapy. We should check their eyes routinely such as dilated fundus examination with an indirect ophthalmoscope in the AIDS patients with CD<sub>4</sub><sup>+ </sup>T lymphocyte counts < 50 cells/Όl.</p

    Rice Stress-Resistant SNP Database.

    BACKGROUND:Rice (Oryza sativa L.) yield is limited inherently by environmental stresses, including biotic and abiotic stresses. Thus, it is of great importance to perform in-depth explorations on the genes that are closely associated with the stress-resistant traits in rice. The existing rice SNP databases have made considerable contributions to rice genomic variation information but none of them have a particular focus on integrating stress-resistant variation and related phenotype data into one web resource. RESULTS:Rice Stress-Resistant SNP database (http://bioinformatics.fafu.edu.cn/RSRS) mainly focuses on SNPs specific to biotic and abiotic stress-resistant ability in rice, and presents them in a unified web resource platform. The Rice Stress-Resistant SNP (RSRS) database contains over 9.5 million stress-resistant SNPs and 797 stress-resistant candidate genes in rice, which were detected from more than 400 stress-resistant rice varieties. We incorporated the SNPs function, genome annotation and phenotype information into this database. Besides, the database has a user-friendly web interface for users to query, browse and visualize a specific SNP efficiently. RSRS database allows users to query the SNP information and their relevant annotations for individual variety or more varieties. The search results can be visualized graphically in a genome browser or displayed in formatted tables. Users can also align SNPs between two or more rice accessions. CONCLUSION:RSRS database shows great utility for scientists to further characterize the function of variants related to environmental stress-resistant ability in rice

    National trends in total cholesterol obscure heterogeneous changes in HDL and non-HDL cholesterol and total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio : a pooled analysis of 458 population-based studies in Asian and Western countries

    Background: Although high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and non-HDL cholesterol have opposite associations with coronary heart disease, multi-country reports of lipid trends only use total cholesterol (TC). Our aim was to compare trends in total, HDL and nonHDL cholesterol and the total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio in Asian and Western countries. Methods: We pooled 458 population-based studies with 82.1 million participants in 23 Asian and Western countries. We estimated changes in mean total, HDL and non-HDL cholesterol and mean total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio by country, sex and age group. Results: Since similar to 1980, mean TC increased in Asian countries. In Japan and South Korea, the TC rise was due to rising HDL cholesterol, which increased by up to 0.17 mmol/L per decade in Japanese women; in China, it was due to rising non-HDL cholesterol. TC declined in Western countries, except in Polish men. The decline was largest in Finland and Norway, at similar to 0.4 mmol/L per decade. The decline in TC in most Western countries was the net effect of an increase in HDL cholesterol and a decline in non-HDL cholesterol, with the HDL cholesterol increase largest in New Zealand and Switzerland. Mean total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio declined in Japan, South Korea and most Western countries, by as much as similar to 0.7 per decade in Swiss men (equivalent to similar to 26% decline in coronary heart disease risk per decade). The ratio increased in China. Conclusions: HDL cholesterol has risen and the total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio has declined in many Western countries, Japan and South Korea, with only a weak correlation with changes in TC or non-HDL cholesterol.Peer reviewe

    Molecular mechanisms of cell death: recommendations of the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death 2018.

    Over the past decade, the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death (NCCD) has formulated guidelines for the definition and interpretation of cell death from morphological, biochemical, and functional perspectives. Since the field continues to expand and novel mechanisms that orchestrate multiple cell death pathways are unveiled, we propose an updated classification of cell death subroutines focusing on mechanistic and essential (as opposed to correlative and dispensable) aspects of the process. As we provide molecularly oriented definitions of terms including intrinsic apoptosis, extrinsic apoptosis, mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT)-driven necrosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, parthanatos, entotic cell death, NETotic cell death, lysosome-dependent cell death, autophagy-dependent cell death, immunogenic cell death, cellular senescence, and mitotic catastrophe, we discuss the utility of neologisms that refer to highly specialized instances of these processes. The mission of the NCCD is to provide a widely accepted nomenclature on cell death in support of the continued development of the field
